The fee basis: order total, not item price

Etsy's transaction fee is 6.5% of the order total the buyer pays — item price, plus shipping if you charge for it, plus gift wrap if you charge for that. Payment processing works the same way: the U.S. example rate of 3% + $0.25 is also applied to the total, including shipping — and where Etsy collects sales tax, that amount can be part of the base as well. Fee bases can differ by charge, so confirm the current rules on Etsy's fee page.

One pair, worked by hand

Take a $46 order. Priced as a $38 item plus $8 shipping, the order total is $46.00. Priced as a $46 item with shipping marked "free," the order total is also $46.00. The transaction fee is 6.5% × $46.00 = $2.99 in both cases. Payment processing is (3% × $46.00) + $0.25 = $1.63 in both cases. Total fees: $4.62, either way. The split between the item-price line and the shipping line isn't part of that calculation — only the total is.

Four price points, both ways

Same math, repeated at a low, two mid, and a higher order total, so it's not just one example doing the work:

Formula for each row: transaction fee = 6.5% × order total. Payment processing (U.S. example) = (3% × order total) + $0.25. Both apply to the order total shown in the left column — not to the item-price split shown in the middle column — which is why the fee total in the right column is identical for both rows in each group.

What actually changes when you switch to "free shipping"

Since the total Etsy takes doesn't move, two other things are what actually change:

• What the buyer sees at checkout. A $46 item with "free shipping" and a $38 item plus $8 shipping read differently on the listing page, even though the buyer pays the same $46 either way.
• Nothing about your own postage cost. What you actually pay to ship the order — the real postage and packaging line — doesn't change based on how you label it to the buyer. It's a real expense either way, separate from what Etsy deducts, and it's the "Shipping cost" input on the calculator below, not part of the fee math on this page.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the order total the buyer pays, which includes shipping if you charge for it (and gift wrap, if you charge for that) — not just the item price. Payment processing is calculated on the same total.

Do my Etsy fees go down if I offer free shipping?

Not if the buyer pays the same total either way. Rolling shipping into the item price and charging it as a separate line produce the same order total, and both Etsy fee lines are calculated on that total — see the worked examples above.

Does offering free shipping affect where my listing shows up in Etsy search?
