Does Etsy Refund Your Fees When You Refund a Buyer? (Full vs. Partial, With the Math)
When you refund an Etsy order through Shop Manager, Etsy's own help pages say the transaction fee and payment processing fee come back automatically. What they don't say is how much comes back on a partial refund, or what happens to the $0.20 listing fee. Below is the math for both a full refund and a partial refund, worked on a real order, plus the one piece Etsy doesn't document clearly enough to state as fact.

What actually gets refunded
Three fees can be in play on any sale. Here's what happens to each one when you issue a refund through Shop Manager.
Transaction fee 6.5% — refunded in full
Etsy's stated policy is that when you refund an order through Shop Manager, the transaction fee tied to that order is credited back.
Payment processing 3% + $0.25 (U.S.) — refunded in full
Same mechanism: the processing charge tied to the refunded payment is credited back when the refund is issued through Shop Manager.
Listing fee $0.20 flat — not refunded
The listing fee is charged when the listing publishes or auto-renews, not when it sells, so refunding the order doesn't touch it. A full refund still leaves the $0.20 listing charge in place. (For every moment that fee can be charged — publish, renewal, multi-quantity sale — see

Worked example — full refund
Order: $50 item + $10 shipping = $60 total, U.S. Etsy Payments, standard rates (6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 processing, $0.20 listing fee — same assumptions used on how-etsy-fees-work).

Refund a buyer in full and Etsy hands back the transaction and processing fees — but the $0.20 listing fee stays gone. On top of that $0.20, you're also out whatever you spent on materials, labor, and any shipping label you already paid for and can't recover.
Worked example — partial refund
Same order ($60 total). This time you refund $20 and the buyer keeps the item.

A $20 partial refund brings back roughly $1.90 in fees on the percentage-based charges. Whether Etsy also prorates a sliver of the flat $0.25 processing fee is the one number this page can't confirm yet — see the flag directly below before you use this for exact accounting.
Unconfirmed: how the flat $0.25 processing fee is handled on a partial refund. Etsy's own refund documentation describes the transaction and processing fees as refunded "automatically" on a refund processed through Shop Manager, but doesn't spell out whether the flat $0.25 component of the processing fee is prorated on a partial refund or left untouched. The percentage portions (6.5% transaction, 3% processing) scaling with the refunded amount is well-supported; the flat-fee proration is not.
